Biography

Dr. Jamie Payton is a Professor of Computer Science and Dean of the Ying Wu College of Computing at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Prior to joining NJIT, she served as the chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Temple University. Her research interests include pervasive computing systems for smart health and well-being, broadening participation of historically underrepresented populations in computing, and evidence-based approaches to improving computer science education. She has been awarded over $40M as PI and Co-PI in research funding through federal grants.

Payton is the director of the STARS Computing Corps, an NSF Alliance for Broadening Participation in Computing. STARS has engaged 70+ colleges and universities in projects designed to promote persistence by connecting computing to community and societal impacts, reinforcing computing knowledge through teaching and practice, and developing professional, entrepreneurial, and creative skills. STARS student members have positive gains in GPA, self-efficacy, computing identity, and commitment to computing, with enhanced outcomes for women, African American/Black and Hispanic/Latinx students. Building on these experiences, Payton is Co-PI for the NSF AI Institute on Inclusive Intelligent Technologies for Education (INVITE NSF AI Institute), which explores research to create AI-enabled learning systems that advance K12 STEM learning outcomes for all students.

Payton earned her B.S. in Computer Science at the University of Tulsa and both a Master’s and Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis.
